Emma Hogarth (Hoagie) continued her strong season
by securing for herself the number one spot in the country for the 12 yr
old girls 50 free with a heat time of 30.99. Emma then went on to take
the Scottish Schools Gold 50 free title with a final time of 31.11. This
is a great result for her School (Danderhall) and Portobello ASC.
Rory McKay took silver in the 100 Fly with a 1:02.74 only narrowly
missing out on top spot by 0.39.
John Macdonald collected a bronze for his 2:27.15 200 IM.
Great Job Emma,Rory,John the whole club is extremely proud of you all.

Ciaran To Compete In London Olympic Pool

Ciaran Mcgeever has been selected to represent
Scotland (South/East) at the Sainsbury’s UK School Games in London from
the 6th-9th of May.
The Games have stupidly been placed during the Scottish exam period, so
Ciaran will also be sitting one of his exams in London. We hope that
this will not spoil his enjoyment of what will be a great experience for
him. Ciaran will be competing in the London Olympic pool, perhaps he
can set a pool record before all the Olympians get there.
We wish Ciaran the very best of luck for his swims and his exam.

TRANENT XMAS GALA, Sat Dec 10 @ Prestonpans

A fun day at Prestonpans, with
judges wearing santa hats and lots of medals being won. We only had
three swimmers in the morning but we had 17 competing in the afternoon -
and, we had 5 coaches there in the afternoon which must be a record.

Ella and Gigi set the tone in the morning session, with Ella
winning a full set of medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze) while Gigi won a
Silver and 3 Bronze.

In the afternoon it was generally the older
swimmers who won the most. JJ had an excellent session, winning 4 Golds
and a Silver (and it was Scott who won the only race that JJ didn't
win). Michelle also had an excellent time, collecting 4 Golds from 4
swims. Benji and Scott also won four medals from 4 swims, Benji winning 2
Golds and 2 Silvers while Scott won a Gold, 2 Silvers and a Bronze.
Morgan was our top 11 yr old, winning a Gold and 3 Silvers. Fi and
Laura both won 2 Silvers and 2 Bronzes each and Grace won a Silver and a
Bronze. Kitty and Ben both collected a pair of Bronzes and Ellie and
Louise collected one medal (a Gold for each of them). Finally, in an
exciting relay race at the end of the day our A team (Morgan, Kitty, JJ
and Scott) won the Gold.

EAST DISTRICTS CHAMPS, Dec 3/4 @ Glenrothes

This was the 200m event weekend and we had a dozen swimmers who
qualified (although a couple missed the meet due to injuries).
We had
four different swimmers who made finals, which is an excellent
achievement, and two (Rory and Iona) who collected medals. Well done to
both of them, Rory had a fantastic last 50m in the fly moving up from
5th to 3rd in the final section of the race (and almost catching 2nd
place too). Rory also made the back final, JJ had a great swim in the
heats of the breast to make the final and Ciaran made two finals (fly
and free) and was first reserve in his other event (back).

HADDINGTON PRESIDENT'S MEET, Fri Dec 2 @ Haddington

As current holders, we took a full team (big thanks to Alfie and Robin for standing in at the eleventh hour) to Haddington.
Its a strange event for spectators as there is no scoreboard and the
swimmers who finish first don't always win top points if they are too
fast (outside the timeband). We were lying 4th
(of 4 teams) after the first two events, third after the third event
and second after the penultimate event. However, we couldn't sustain
that improvement and slipped back to finish 3rd at the end (although
only 7 points behind the wimmers, so it was very close).

Our top points scorer was Sam (8 points) with Michele, Sarah,
Gigi and Robin scoring 7 points each. In terms of individual swims,
Stuart had the best night with a PB in all three events. Anna, Sarah and
Kitty recorded two PBs and even 'special guest' Gavin got a PB in the 50m free.

CLUB TROPHIES, Sun Nov 27 @ Porty Pool

We had a good turn-out for this year's trophy events and a full
compliment of officials to cover all five lanes. The Open events
produced some excellent races, with the boys 100m breast and the girls
100m IM being the most exciting. Both of the 100m IM trophies were retained by last year's winners (Iona and John), as was the 100m fly for boys (Rory M). New winners were Nieve (100m back and fly) and JJ (100m breast, breaking a run of six years where the winners name began with S).

In the PB events, the trophies and medals are awarded to those
who beat their current PB by the biggest margin. The girls 100m breast
was very close with Zoe winning just ahead of Gigi and Sophie. The boys
100m back was retained by Stuart, who had set a new PB only a month
earlier so he did well to win ahead of Ciaran and Benji. The final events were the 100m free where Benji won the boys event ahead of JJ and Scott. The girls 100m free was very close, with Gigi just edging Emma out of first place and Lucy picking up the bronze.

COVERDALE TROPHY, 25 Nov @ Porty Pool

We hosted this round of the Coverdale Novice trophy and the pool
was filled with shouting and cheering as an exciting night of races took
place. We had an undersized team as some swimmers weren't available
which meant that we dropped a lot of points due to empty lanes. However,
the swimmers who were there did really well and some picked up a lot of
points for the team, especially Olivia (32 points), Ella (23 points),
Rory C (21 points) and Ollie and Abbie M who both picked up 12 points
for winning a race each.

Thanks to Gavin for looking after the team and a special mention
to Pamela who had the hardest ever marshalling job ( no updated start
sheets and about 70 or 80 very young, inexperienced swimmers to
organise).

EDINBURGH SCHOOLS, 20 Nov @ Ainslie Park

26 Porty swimmers were competing
in this year's Schools champs, representing their schools in individual
and relay events. Our older boys led the way, with Ciaran, Rory and John
all picking up 2 Golds each from two events. Iona and Emma both won
a Gold and a Silver each and Scott and Nieve both won a Silver and a Bronze. JJ, Fi
and Ellie all won Silver and Kathryn collected a bronze.

Benji helped his school team to relay Gold, John + Ciaran were
half of the Portobello High team that won Silver and Thomas was also in a
Silver winning team. Gigi led her school team out for a Bronze and the
Portobello High team that won Bronze in the 14/15 girls comprised Nieve,
Fi, Laura and Iona.

We now wait to hear who has qualified for Scottish Schools, which
is much harder this year as only 12 swimmers (6 for 5th/6th yrs) from
the whole of Scotland will go forward to the Finals in East Kilbride.

Well done swimmers.
