This was the final chance of the season for a few of our swimmers
to secure bronze squad times or record new PBs. Once again, our top
performer was Ciaran who recorded a bronze squad time with every swim
(just missing a silver time by half a sec in the 200m free), won 4
golds and a silver and picked up the best boy trophy in the 13/14 age
group. Rosanna also had a great day on Sat, recording three bronze squad
times from three swims. Emma tackled two tough events (200m fly and
400m... Continue reading ...

2 LEAGUES TITLES AND 1 RUNNER-UP
As the 2011 Lothian Leagues came to an exciting conclusion,
we ended up winning two of the Leagues and finished 2nd in another. The
morning session saw some great swims from a number of swimmers - Eilidh
and Ben had excellent PBs in the 200m free, Gigi and Sophie had good
improvements in the 100m IM, Robin had a great swim in the 50m back (4.5
sec PB), Zoe took another 2.8 sec off her 50m fly best time and both
Emma and Thomas improved their 50m breast ... Continue reading ...
Hearts Novice - Sun May 29 @ Leith Academy
Posted by Portobello ASC on Tuesday, June 28, 2011,
A very good day at Leth Academy and a very productive afternoon in
particular. Gigi had an excellent day, winning two golds and a silver
from only three events. Jenna won a gold (winning the breast just ahead
of Gigi, so we got both gold and silver), Thomas won two silvers in his
only two events, with Sophie and Caitlyn both winning a bronze. The
relay team (Ella, Erin C, Gigi, Robin, Sophie and Thomas) also won a
bronze.
We also saw some excellent PBs from Ella (breast), Thomas
(free... Continue reading ...
East District Open Champs - May 14/15 @ Tollcross
Posted by Portobello ASC on Tuesday, June 28, 2011,
A relatively rare chance for some
of our swimmers to compete in a long course meet, this year's ED Open
was at Tollcross (which, of course, is not actually in the East). Our
top performer over the weekend was Ciaran, who won our one medal (in the
100m fly) and also secured a 4th place and two 5th places. Both John
and Iona just missed a medal, finishing 4th in the 200m back and 50m
breast respectively.
Ciaran recorded PBs in all but one of his events, Iona had two
PBs, Anna C, Nie... Continue reading ...
Haddington Total Swimmer - Sun May 8 @ Pretonpans
Posted by Portobello ASC on Tuesday, June 28, 2011,
We only had seven swimmers at this year's Total Swimmer meet but still
managed to have two finalists in this high standard event. Both Emma H
and Iona qualified for the 200m IM final in their respective age groups
with Emma collecting a bronze medal. The quality of our girls swimming
(Erin, Nieve, Jade, Morgan and Eilidh along with our two finalists) was
such that all events saw the majority of them recording a PB - in the
100m IM there were 6 PBs, 50m back had 6, so did 50m fly, 50m b... Continue reading ...
Livingston Dev Meet - Sat May 7 @ Prestonpans
Posted by Portobello ASC on Tuesday, June 28, 2011,
We had a sizeable group of swimmers at the LDD gala, two of whom
did very well in reaching some finals. Laura made four finals, taking a
gold and three silvers and Rosanna made two finals (back and fly).
There were numerous PBs
across the day, some into double figures in terms of number of secs
improvement. The biggest PBs were Grace (back), Sarah (fly), Anna S and
Stuart (back), Grace and Stuart (free), Kitty and Jenna (back), Louise
(free), Stuart (breast) and Sarah (free). Many thank... Continue reading ...
Introducing, Coach Pennington

I would like to
take this opportunity to officially welcome David Pennington
(pictured) to Portobello A.S.C. David has joined us from the University
of Edinburgh Performance squad where he enjoyed a long and successful
swimming career under some of the country’s finest and most free
thinking coaches. David’s enthusiasm for the sport of swimming along
with in depth knowledge of stroke mechanics and long term athlete
development all add up to one heck of a coach.
I am delighted to

Dear Parents and swimmers, As you all know a couple of months ago
Portobello ASC enlisted the services of Darren Ward as our club
development officer with a view to improving all aspects of the swimming
section of our club. I am sure most of you will have met him or seen
him at sessions in the last couple of months. Since starting in
December Darren, and the management committee as a whole, have been
working tirelessly behind the scenes to evaluate where we as a club are,
where we wan... Continue reading ...
Scottish Schools Finals - 29 Jan @ Tollcross
Posted by Portobello ASC on Tuesday, June 28, 2011,
We had 9 PASC swimmers in total who qualified for the Finals this
year representing their schools, with no less than 5 swimmers making it
into the top 12 of their respective events. Despite the lack of
training in a long course pool there were still lots of PBs, most
notably Ellie G who came 10th overall in the 100m Back for 12-13 year
old girls. But it was Rory McKay who stole the day, taking the bronze
medal in the 100m Fly and was then straight into the pool for the 200m
Back whe... Continue reading ...
Lothian Club Champs - 30 Jan @ Prestonpans
Posted by Portobello ASC on Tuesday, June 28, 2011,
Our most important team competition of the year, this year we were
once again competing in the top division. After a hectic day of racing,
the final positions were decided by the relays and, by a tiny margin of
only 2 points, we finished 4th and will therefore be competing in Div 2
next year.
There were lots of exciting races but the best came at the end when
the excellent 14+ boys team of Scott, Rory M, John and Neilson won a
very noisy 4x 50m free race. The young girls team also took ... Continue reading ...
Telfer Cup - 30 Jan @ Prestonpans
Posted by Portobello ASC on Tuesday, June 28, 2011,
It only comprises four relay races but the Telfer Cup
is an important part of the swim season - apart from anything else, the
trophy itself is one of the oldest in Scottish swimming. We managed to
get three of our 4 team in the medals which meant that we finished in
third place overall.
In terms of individual performances, there were excellent
swims from Jamie D and Ellie who both swam official PBs and from Laura,
JJ, Ciaran, Rory M and the legend that is Neilson. Well done ... Continue reading ...
Livingston Development Gala - 22 Jan @ Whitburn
Posted by Portobello ASC on Tuesday, June 28, 2011,
We had a small team at this development gala aimed at
younger swimmers. Other than the bizarre requirement for all swimmers to
wear the same yellow caps (which made warm-up a bit difficult to
monitor), the kids all had a great time.
We had three top 6 finishes (Elilidh in the back and breast, Thomas
in the breast) and several good PBs, best of which was Jenna who took
nearly 4 secs off her 50m free time. Other best swims were Holly in the
50m back, Erin in the 25m free and ... Continue reading ...
